Recipe of the Week: Glögg (Swedish mulled wine)

Prep time

The familiar smells of cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger will fill your entire home with the scent of the Yuletide as you make this classic Swedish version of mulled wine.

  • 750-ml dry red wine (cabernet etc.)

  • 3 dl port or Madeira

  • 2 dl vodka

  • 3 dl granulated sugar

  • Spice sachet (wrap in cheesecloth)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, broken into pieces

  • 1 tsp. cardamom pods

  • 1 small piece ginger, peeled or one tsp. ground

  • Zest of ½ orange

  • 6 whole cloves

  • When serving
  • Blanched, slivered or whole almonds

  • Raisins

  • Make a sachet of the spices and tie it with a long string
  • Put the sachet in a large sauce pot
  • Add the wine, port, and vodka to the pot and heat over medium-high heat until nearly boiling
  • Use a long-handled lighter to light the surface of the heated wine
  • While the wine is burning, pour the sugar into the pot
  • Remove from heat and let cool (if desired, you may add raisins and almonds at this stage to allow them to steep in the wine)
  • Store in a glass bottle in the refrigerator
  • To serve:
  • Heat the wine gently until nearly boiling
  • Add a spoonful of slivered almonds and raisins to each mug
  • Pour the hot wine into the mug and serve with pepparkakor!
